A Christmas Carol: Year 13 goes to the theatre to see a classic ...

-On the 17th of December we visited the Pfalzbau, Ludwigshafen, to enjoy the stage play ‘A Christmas Carol’ with Mr. Miller and Ms. Barth. “A Christmas Carol” was written by Charles Dickens, one of the most famous writers of English literature, and first published in 1843.

As the curtain falls ‘Charles Dickens’ himself presents the main character of the story.
It is the old and stingy Ebenezer Scrooge, a bad-tempered merchant who is not able to get along with other people and whose only friend was Marley, his former partner, who died on Christmas Eve seven years ago. This is one of the reasons why he hates Christmas.
As he arrives at home on Christmas evening the ghost of Marley appears and announces the visit of three ghosts to him. And indeed throughout the course of his story, he is haunted by those three spirits who want to ‘save’ his life by changing his thoughts and his attitude towards life.
So, the ghost of Christmas' Past, the ghost of Christmas' Present and the ghost of Christmases yet to come take Scrooge through different scenes of his life. It starts with his own unhappy childhood when he still had feelings for others and continues with families celebrating Christmas with love and joy. It finally ends with the future prospect, were he sees his own grave stone and listens to people discussing his death, not very much in his favour.

Scrooge realizes now, how much happiness he has missed in his life and how much unhappiness he has caused. He decides to change his way of life; he visits a poor clerk of his to whom he was used to be very rude and tells him he would give him a rise in pay. Besides he gives a large sum of money to the poor.
All in all you could say that the story fits perfectly to the time before Christmas.
On the one hand Charles Dickens was successful in showing the social injustices of the 19th century and on the other hand to charm the audience with a nice Christmas fairy tale.

And so we want to wish you all a blessed Christmas and a happy new year!
